Update to the 1969 Delta State University Sit-In
Muriel Lucas wrote me to tell me that there was a very "important omission in the news" that we shared about the DSU Sit-In.
The omission was that "our uncle Donald Carl Sutton was one of the leaders of the 1969 protest at DSU.
The state of Mississippi had a Sovereingty Commission which was set up to protect segregation in the state, from about 1964 to 1977. The SC kept a list of names of people who they considered to be "dangerous" . Donald's name appeared on that list at least 13 times, (Muriel's name appreared once).
Here is its web address: http://mdah.state.ms.us/bugle/sovcom/scagencycasehistory.php.
Visit it when you can.
Muriel wanted to make cerrtain that the family knows something about Uncle Donald's contributions to an important cause.
Thank you Muriel for sharing that bit of history with us.
And we honor the contributions that you and Uncle Donald have made in the struggle for Civil Rights.

Delta State 1969 Sit-in Participants Honored.
Delta State Alumni that participated in the sit-in attending the program are: (seated, from left) Cora L. Hicks of Chicago, Ill., Lula Orsby-Jones of West Helena, Ark., Mary Louis Bass of Killeen, Texas, Effie Sledge of Batesville, Ark., Yvonne McClinton Stanford of Clarksdale, (standing, from left) Beverly Edward Perkins of Cleveland, Maggie Crawford of Cleveland, Muriel McCraney Lucas of Cleveland, Talmadge Davis, Jr. of Cleveland, Willy E. Cherry of Benoit, Jennifer Buckner of Cleveland, Joann Anderson Wynn of Hattiesburg, Thomas E. Edwards of Ruleville, and J. B. Smiley of Bartlett, Tenn.Delta State University celebrated its diversity by commemorating the 40th anniversary of the sit-in demonstration with a program entitled “Catalysts for Change: Understanding Diversity at Delta State” Tuesday, Oct. 27, in the Jacob Conference Center of Ewing Hall.
Delta State alumni that participated in the demonstration in 1969 were honored during a commemoration of the event and the changes it brought.
On March 10, 1969, a group of 52 students staged a sit-in demonstration in front of the Delta State’s President’s Office to protest the disregard of a list of demand previously presented to the administration. The students were arrested and imprisoned for the night at Parchman State Penitentiary. The next day, they were returned to the Bolivar County Court House where they were released on $200 bonds.
The actions of the students have now been seen as a turning point for race relations at Delta State University.
The highlight of the program was a panel discussion featuring participants from the 1969 sit-in and a professor from the time of the sit-in. The focus of the panel discussion was the events that led up to the sit-in demonstration, and the demonstration itself.
Sponsored by the Delta State University Diversity Advisory Committee, the program was intended to celebrate the courage and conviction of those former students who became “catalysts for change” at Delta State.

More Photos from the Cruise Experience
Here is Uncle Harold at Dunns River Falls. This was one of the best experiences that many of us who participated had. We really did not know what to expect, but we ended up getting soaking wet, along with a little workout. If I ever make it back to Ocho Rios, I would do Dunns River Falls again. Try and I bought the DVD which turned out to be only about 20 minutes worth of footage, but it was all good.
In Ocho Rios, Jamaica, the family all got on a tour bus and drove into the heart of Ocho Rios to see how people were really living. It was the first time many of us every drove on the left side of the road. In Jamaica, they say, the "Left is right, and right is suicide."Monday, August 17, 2009

Saturday's Conference Call
Today we held our last conference call before our Family Reunion Cruise next weekend. It was our most successful call to date. We had family from Mississippi, California, Illinois, and New Mexico on the call.
We discussed the itinerary for the cruise, and answered any questions that family may have had.
We all expect to have a wonderful time on the ship, and we can't wait to get the party started!
